Samba and African Drumming Workshops
African and Samba drumming are increasingly popular. Hear the beat. Watch the group performing the lively movements. Feel the heightened energy in the room. We do West African, Brazilian and Samba Drumming as well as Kit Drumming and Percussion; all tastes catered for. Use of phonetics and counting rhythm phrases is extremely useful for Key Skills Numeracy learning. African drumming workshops can include a discussion or introduction to African culture as well as the actual drumming.
Drama and Group Activities
This may include Role-play or Improvisation, Puppetry, comedy drama and Physical Theatre, to name but a few disciplines. We regularly employ Drama workshops or simply what we call 'group activities', for the embodiment of key themes / initiatives, such as social inclusion, anti-racism, and respect for self and others. We have achieved outstanding results from our Drama projects (see testimonials page). Feedback from participants regularly states that their confidence has increased since starting on our courses.
Japanese Origami and other Art Workshops
Our Japanese crafts artist, Yoshiko Kurakawa started learning Origami at home in Tokyo many years ago. She has taught origami (folding) and kirigami (with scissors) in schools and youth centres, as well as with adults for many years. From simple things for small children, to intricate designs for youths and adults, there is a plethora of fantastic things participants get to make and keep. Using Japanese traditional materials, it's a great introduction to the culture and traditional art of Japan.
Makeup, hair and beauty workshops and courses
Makeup and beauty workshops are great fun for girls and women of all ages. We deliver these both as workshops and more often as six to ten week courses with a certificate of achievement awarded on completion. Workshops involve teaching young women how to look after their skin, hair and nails, as well as beautify themselves with a variety of styles, including more formal looks for job interviews for example. A course may involve learning a range of skills including manicures, pedicures, facials, safe eyelash application, and safe body waxing; nail art, artificial nail application and body exfoliation. All these are things most young girls will regularity do some of, and learning how to do it well and safely is a very useful skill.
Music Production (make their own compilation CD) programme
Music production - this is by far our most popular course with children and young people of any age. Over six two hour sessions with both a rapper or MC (sometimes a singer) and DJ, students will learn all about Programming, Sampling, Mixing and Arranging Music. Our programmes are all taught by experts in the use of 'Pro-Tools', 'Cubase', 'Acid' and other Music-Production computer programs. Participants' get to write, practise and then recite and record their own songs or raps that end up on a compilation designed CD that they get to keep. Skills are learned, confidence is built and creativity is enhanced. This is our number 1 recommended course.
